HISTORY
In 1928, the All Black rugby team, known as the “Invincibles,” arrived on the shores of South Africa. The rugby world was rocked when a young, 19-year-old Alvi van der Merwe scored the first try in history against the All Blacks on African soil. Alvi went on to be selected as the 221st player for the South African national rugby team, the Springboks, who toured Britain and Ireland undefeated with Alvi in their ranks. Our 221 range pays tribute to this winning legacy. A toast to our –and your– unique story. Our 221 range honours our founder, Oupa Alvi, and his legendary South African rugby career.
TTHE GRAPES
With an ideal Mediterranean microclimate, an abundance of soil diversity and water from the life-giving Breede River, the Alvi’s Drift
vineyards are ideally positioned for producing remarkable wines of unique character and complexity. The grapes for our 221 Sauvignon Blanc wines are handharvested from carefully selected, prime vineyards on our wine farm. Harvesting takes place in the cool, early morning hours, ensuring that sugar levels are stable and that the concentration of aromas and flavours in grapes is optimal.
IN THE CELLAR
Only the best-quality, free-run juice is used to produce this unique Sauvignon Blanc wine. An intriguing blend of barrel-matured and
fresh, crisp, tank-fermented Sauvignon Blanc, approximately 30% of this wine was wildyeast fermented, then aged up to 12 months
in predominantly older french oak barrels, but more recently also a few french acacia barrels, to add complexity and depth. The remainder of the wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks, highlighting the wonderful, primary-fruit character of this vintage.
