WineDrop on the Alvi’s Drift Albertus Viljoen Chardonnay 2021
At WineDrop, we’re proud to stock wines that honour both heritage and craft, and few do this as well as Alvi’s Drift. The Albertus Viljoen Chardonnay forms part of their flagship Icon range, named after the estate’s founding patriarch, Albertus Viljoen “Alvi” van der Merwe — a visionary who planted roots in Worcester in 1928. Today, his grandson and namesake continues that legacy with site-driven, barrel-aged wines that show true South African character.
This vintage is made from old-vine Chardonnay, grown in limestone-rich soils along the Breede River — a terroir that brings structure, minerality, and freshness to the final wine. The grapes are whole-bunch pressed and 100% barrel-fermented using wild yeasts, then matured for 12 months in 70% new French oak barrels. Regular bâtonnage (lees stirring) and careful blending from individual barrels give the wine its creamy texture and layered complexity.
Expect a Chardonnay that’s both elegant and powerful, with ripe citrus, subtle toast, and a beautifully long, balanced finish — ideal for those who appreciate serious white wines with ageing potential
